The NFL Is Back: Five Training Camp Storylines You Need to Know

NFL Training Camp 2026

Football is back. Pads are on, camp battles are heating up, and there is no shortage of storylines to follow before Week 1 kicks off on September 9.

Somewhere right now a backup quarterback is having the best two weeks of his life before getting cut in September. Training camp is officially in full swing and here are the five biggest storylines.

The Hall of Fame Game Just Gave Us Two Quarterback Stories

The Panthers beat the Cardinals 33-30 in Canton last night and somehow a preseason game with mostly second and third stringers managed to produce real intrigue. Carson Beck, the Cardinals rookie, was the best player on the field in the first half, looking comfortable and decisive in his first NFL action. Then Haynes King stole the show for Carolina, finishing with a game-winning 5-yard touchdown run with no time left, going 21-of-34 for 180 yards and two scores. King looked so good that real questions are now being asked about whether he should be climbing the Panthers depth chart over Kenny Pickett. It is August 7 and we are already debating quarterback situations. Welcome back, football.

A Fifth-Round Rookie Is Already Earning First-Team Reps With Mahomes

In three days at training camp, Cyrus Allen earned first-team reps with Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs offense — a remarkable early statement for a fifth-round pick out of Cincinnati. Andy Reid noted that Mahomes may have already established trust in Allen, and fellow receiver Tyquan Thornton called him "elusive" with "very good" route-running at the catch point. "Everything is pretty much timing," Allen said. "I'm on his time now." He suffered a minor shin bruise last week but has since returned to practice. Keep an eye on this one.

Hard Knocks Episode 1 Was Everything

The Seattle Seahawks are the first defending Super Bowl champion ever featured on Hard Knocks and the premiere did not disappoint. Cooper Kupp revealed he attended the Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift wedding — and that when he got the invitation he genuinely thought it was a joke. Sam Darnold and Kupp also had an on-camera conversation about LeBron signing with the 76ers, which is somehow a sentence that exists in a football training camp show. Coach Mike Macdonald gave a speech referencing the 1990s Chicago Bulls, players got their Super Bowl rings, and a practice fight ended with Derick Hall delivering what can only be described as a chokeslam. Episode 2 cannot come soon enough.

The Falcons Are in Chaos Before a Single Regular Season Snap

Atlanta confirmed this week that edge rusher Jalon Walker will miss the entire 2026 season with a torn ACL suffered in practice. That alone would be brutal. But his running mate James Pearce Jr., another first-round pick from 2025, faces a potential league suspension after being arrested on domestic violence charges in February. The Falcons spent two first-round picks building what was supposed to be one of the most exciting young pass-rush duos in the league. They might open Week 1 without either of them. Rough way to start a season.

The Browns QB Battle Is a Race to the Bottom

Cleveland heads into camp with an unsettled quarterback situation and none of the options are inspiring much confidence. Nobody involved is playing well enough to make the decision easy, which means the Browns could be well into the regular season before they figure out who their guy actually is. In a division with Baltimore, Pittsburgh, and Cincinnati, that is a problem. Some things never change in Cleveland.

By the numbers

Haynes King threw for 180 yards, two touchdowns, and zero interceptions while adding a game-winning rushing score in last night's HOF Game. The Falcons used two first-round picks on their pass rush last year. Both might miss significant time in 2026. Cyrus Allen was the 176th pick in the draft and earned first-team reps in three days. The NFL is funny like that.
