LeBron's Last Dance Is Happening in Philadelphia

Eight years in LA, done. A summer of retirement whispers, over. LeBron James has made his last decision and he is taking it to Philadelphia.

James signed a two-year, $8 million contract with the 76ers on Friday, announcing the move on X in a lengthy post that was equal parts retirement speech and hype video. "I thought I was done when the season ended," he wrote. "I still truly love this game, and I have more to give. This is my last decision. I'm not going for money. I still want to sacrifice. I still want to compete, to win and to have a chance at the feeling of winning another championship." Not exactly a quiet Friday afternoon in Philly.

The roster he is walking into is genuinely terrifying. The 76ers added Jaylen Brown from the Celtics earlier this offseason, meaning Philadelphia now has two former Finals MVPs on the same team. Add Joel Embiid — who already won a gold medal alongside LeBron at the 2024 Olympics — and Tyrese Maxey, and you have one of the most loaded rosters the Eastern Conference has seen in years. The Knicks just won a championship. The 76ers just decided they want the next one.

There is one wrinkle worth noting: LeBron may opt to live in New York and helicopter commute to Philadelphia for games. That is a sentence that exists in the world now. The man is 41 years old, signing with his fifth team, and considering a helicopter commute as a lifestyle choice. LeBron James truly does not do anything small.

Cleveland, Miami, Golden State, and Minnesota were all in the mix before he landed in Philly. The Sixers were the team that put up billboards in Cleveland begging him to come eight years ago and got laughed at. Nobody is laughing now.

LeBron averaged 20.9 points, 7.2 assists, and 6.1 rebounds over 60 games with the Lakers last season and made his 22nd straight All-Star Game. He is 41 years old. That stat line is from a 41-year-old man. The Eastern Conference should probably be concerned.
